Leading designers have tried to forecast which graphic designs will trend in 2018. These are a few that make the cut
Last year we saw the juxtaposition of vibrant colors with bold imagery. Some of the most beautiful colors in nature are bold and eye catching to draw in attention. Why wouldn’t the same principles apply to graphic design? Bold colors will help the content stand out in the meme-infested social media.
Brutalism is one of the design trends that really kicked off in the year 2017. Brutalism at its core captures and uses the “raw” elements of a design. Its a revived style that makes its presence known through its air of strength and solidarity. A great example of this style would be the Southbank Centre rebranding. The simple branding and typeface flows in harmony with Southbank’s architecture.
Modern Still Life
The high-end, styled, and modern still life was a big trend last year. According to the creative director of CBA Italy, it was “contemporary, geometrical, and a bit abstract.” This adds an element of connection to your content thus giving your website a more tangible “real world” feeling for your viewers. Most of this design employs flat colors with simple objects and shapes. A great example is the Tiffany’s Christmas Campaign done in collaboration with art photographer Roe Ethridge.
Simplicity seems to have been the growing trend in design in 2017. The internet has become saturated with attention grabbing images, videos, popups, and animations. Flat graphics have a refreshing feel to them because their simplicity is appealing in this stimulation rich environment. They’re less chaotic design can be very attractive and doesn’t blend in with everyone else. It will no doubt grow even bigger in 2018, especially in packaging designs. This design features the important information with intriguing illustrations.
According to Cesana, 3D modeling is the new frontier of graphic design. With 3D design you literally have the ability to make your graphic designs pop! The One-color 3D design has significantly grown in popularity over the past year. This method utilizes the first trend we mentioned above which is why 3D modeling is a powerful design tool for your websites. More and more bold colors and backgrounds have been adopted as a marketing strategy. 3D modeling can be seen in the Dolby Digital works of George Lucas and David McLeod.
These were particularly big in 2017. There is an undeniable personal touch these designs give to branding and marketing. It’s something appealing that resonates with many people on a personal level. One of the trends noticed in 2017 was the desire to be more personal through design, and that is exactly what this design achieves.
